Carrie Powell Wins Her First: Vienna Open Riichi Tournament

Vienna city park

LOCATION 11 October 2015 - Carrie Powell from the Czech Republic - haunted by bad luck in her last few tournaments - finally won her first tournament. The fight for the runner-up positions was quite intense, as Lena Weinguny and Juraj Jergus - ranked 2nd and 3rd after the 7th round - played at the same table in the last hanchan. Since Juraj won the table and Lena got 4th, Juraj jumped to 2nd place and Lena - who was lucky that most of her pursuers also lost points in the last round - manged to remain in the top 3.

We had 36 participants from 4 different countries. Of course there were a lot of familiar faces but we also had lots of new players who played their very first tournament in Vienna. Even though not experienced in tournament play most of the new people brought a high skill level with them, so the overall level was quite good. We played a total of 8 hanchans on 2 days. The atmosphere was very relaxed and easygoing. Carrie Powell from the Czech Republic - haunted by bad luck in her last few tournaments - finally won her first tournament. There were glass trophies for the positions 1-4, bags made out of mahjong fabric for the top 3 and some small prizes for best hanchan, last place and lowest ranked non-austrian player.
