Q. What is duplicate mahjong?
A. The short answer: players don't need to understand the details of the duplicate process, they just sit down at the walls provided to them and do their best as they normally would. The long answer is relevant only to tournament organizers. It's based on the way the walls are prebuilt for each hand. It is mahjong played with the elements of luck taken out, so that players can be ranked based solely on skill. This is a requirement in order for mahjong to be considered a mind sport, and for mahjong to qualify as a potential event in the 2020 Olympics.
